A Wine Dream, a Passionate Winemaker and an Exclusive Vineyard

A highlight for me this month has been meeting the Patland Family and having the opportunity to learn about them and their story. Their love of wine and especially a great Cabernet Sauvignon has lead them on their own journey to create many outstanding and well recognized wines from Napa Valley, CA. Henry Patland, founder of Patland Estate Vineyards, fell in love with Napa Valley after many visits starting in the early 80’s.  Henry also enjoyed a great Cabernet Sauvignon and found that Napa Valley produced some of the best.

Henry and Olga Patland

Henry Patland and his wife Olga acquired Terra del Cuore in 2007 from then owner Jack Daniels of Wilson Daniels, LTD that represents some of the most exclusive wines in the world.  Soon after their purchase Henry decided he would like to make his own great Cabernet Sauvignon.  It was after sharing his idea and dream with a friend that he was introduced to local winemaker Jay Buoncristiani.  After the two met and learned about each other and their passion for great wine a friendship was formed.  And after Henry tried some of Jay’s wines he knew he was the right person to help him create his dream Cabernet Sauvignon. Henry had no doubt in his mind that the two of them could make great wine together.

Jay Buoncristiani, a Santa Clara University graduate with combined degrees in Chemistry, Biology and Physics; and the previous winemaker at Hess Collection Winery, became the head winemaker at Patland’s in 2007.  Jay found the perfect job that allowed him to blend the art of winemaking and the science behind it. Jay and his three brothers also own Buoncristiani Family Winery. Jay’s wines have earned high regards in the wine industry and he was named “Rising Star of Napa Cabernet” by the Wine Spectator.

In the beginning Patland’s sourced their grapes from Stagecoach Vineyard and on their first release achieved a 95 point rating from Wine Enthusiast. Stagecoach is the largest south-facing mountain vineyard in Napa.  Stagecoach is also Cabernet Sauvignon-focused, with over half of the vines planted, making it an ideal source of grapes.

I’m grateful to be able to try and enjoy their wines that represent a family dream, and the product of such an exclusive vineyard and a passionate winemaker.

I would like to introduce you to Patland’s 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, grapes sourced from Stagecoach Vineyard. A small batch wine production yields the highest quality of winemaking and you can definitely taste it in this wine. This Cabernet Sauvignon, is rich in sheer fruity depth. On the nose you’ll get, red cherries and wild strawberries. Bold and fully ripened, this wine overtakes you with blackcurrants and pronounced, balanced tannins. A Cabernet with an unquestionably long lifeline ahead.

And for all you wine lovers. You can also enjoy this bottle with me. I have a special discount code for my followers for the month of August. You will receive 20% OFF on your bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon if you use, promo code “lorenawinediary”.

As I sit here enjoying this incredible wine it reminds me that every bottle has a story behind it.  I find myself appreciating it even more after doing the research and learning more about the background of each wine.  I find myself engulfed in the social aspects of the wine world and then realize I have many common interests with people regarding wine. Sharing my wine passion and connecting with people from all over the world is just priceless and one of the many reasons I love doing this.
